J Bennett - Kingsbridge

J BENNETT OF KINGSBRIDGE (DEVON)

Circa 1790

Height 89½ inches

Rare and elegant antique mahogany longcase (grandfather) clock of eight day duration
.

The fine mahogany case is a rare design standing 89½ inches high. It is very elegantly proportioned with gently tapering case influenced by the designs of Thomas Sheraton.  The case terminates in a swan-neck pediment with brass paterae and ball & spire finial. The hood has brass capped columns. .

The original movement is of eight day duration with rack striking sounding the hours on a single bell.

The time is displayed via blued steel hands to the arched silvered dial with Roman hour numerals and conventional quarter numbering. The centre of the dial has a subsidiary seconds, date aperture and is signed "J Bennett - Kingsbridge". The silvered dial is beautifully engraved - to the arch is a mythical Ho Ho bird carrying a banner bearing the legend "Tempus Fugit", beneath that, floral swags descend to decorate the top dial corners. The bottom corners are similarly decorated with floral designs.
