John Stripe - Chichester

JOHN STRIPE OF CHICHESTER (WEST SUSSEX)

Circa 1740

Height 82½ inches

Status: Sold

An early 18th century antique oak longcase (grandfather) clock of thirty hour duration with 10" arched brass dial and wonderful sunburst dial-centre engraving by this highly regarded and well documented Sussex maker

The small oak case is of slim elegant proportions standing only 82½ inches high. The long arched-top trunk door emphasises the elegance of this clock. To the hood there are integral front and rear quarter columns with gilded capitals. Above the arch is an interesting feature with dummy blind fretwork behind attractive cut-outs.

The original brass framed movement is chain driven and of thirty hour duration. It has very early rack striking and a repeat mechanism.

The time is displayed to the small 10-inch arched brass dial via blued steel hands. The matted dial centre carries a stunning sunburst engraving. The silvered chapter ring carries both Roman hour numerals and conventional five-minutes markings with fleur-de-lys decoration indicating the half hour. To the arch is a signature boss “John Stripe – Chichester” with wheatear engravings to the edge and an additional sun complete with face. Spandrels to the corners and arch complete the dial.

This is an exceptional and charming early oak clock with rare small arched dial by a documented maker.
