Samuel Roper - Crewkerne

Antique oak longcase (grandfather) clock with brass dial.
 
The oak case stands 83½ inches high and is of good colour and very slim elegant proportions. It has a long trunk door, interesting burr oak inlay beneath the top hood moulding and full front columns with gilded capitals.
 
The movement is of eight day duration with rack striking sounding the hours on a bell.
 
The time is displayed via blued steel hands to the 10 inch brass dial. The raised chapter ring has Roman hour numerals and stylish half-hour markers. The four dial corners are decorated with cherub spandrels and it has a matted dial centre. The chapter ring is signed "S Roper - Crewkerne".

Samuel Roper was born in 1707 in Crewkerne Somerset he appears to be the earliest of an extended and highly regarded Somerset family of clockmakers - other members hailed from Oakhill and Shepton Mallett

Crewkerne was an important coaching stop on the Exeter to London route and is sometimes shown on early maps as "Croke-Horn"
