Antique oak longcase (grandfather) clock of small size with square brass dial.

Small high quality original oak case of elegant proportions with (removable) caddy top, long shaped-top trunk door and raised panel to the base - all over exceptional colour

Square brass dial with silvered chapter ring signed "W Newby - Kendal", spandrels to the corners, blued steel hands, seconds dial and date aperture, detailed engraving to the dial centre

Original eight day brass movement



About The Maker

 This clock by William Newby of Kendal in Westmorland in the English Lake District who worked individually and together with James Newby they may have been brothers. Various clocks recorded by them both with brass and painted dials. Clocks range between 1765 and 1800. It was probably these men who supplied cabinetmakers Gillows of Lancaster with a clock in 1797 "for a case they were making good 30 hours clock 13" square day of month etc & metal chains china dial from Newby - £2.11.0d "(Gillows records).
