John Belling of Bodmin 1764 grandfather clock

John Belling of Bodmyn (Bodmin) Cornwall

Dated 1764

Height 76 inches

Status:
Wonderful example of the work of this sought after Cornish Clockmaker

John Belling's dials are quite distinctive and often dated as this example is 1764. Note also the old spelling of Bodmyn on the dial engraving.  It is housed in its original primitive stained pine case - small and simple

A rare survivor after two hundred and fifty years of Cornish domestic life!

On a historical note: John Belling founded a clock-making dynasty and several generations of the Belling family continued as clockmakers in Bodmin until the early years of the twentieth century when they changed to manufacturing domestic cookers and became famous for the "Baby Belling"
