John Walton - Aldstone

JOHN WALTON OF ALSTON Cumberland

Circa 1780

Height 83 inches

Status:  Sold

A charming and well proportioned mahogany and oak longcase (grandfather) clock with rare painted automata dial.

It is rare to find a 30 hour cottage longcase clock with an automata feature such as this rocking ship example

The painted dial has Roman hour numerals and a separate date indicator with delicate floral paintings to the four corners. The arch section has a rare automata feature of a ship which rocks back and forth to the beat of the clock. The finely painted scene behind the ship is of a harbour entrance. The dial is sign Jn Walton Aldston (the old spelling of Alston)

The movement is of 30 hour duration and strikes the hours on a bell.

The case is small and elegant, made of oak with mahogany trim and is a good example of this regional style.

The condition of this rather charming antique clock is substantially original with only minor sympathetic restorations. The movement has been fully overhauled to the highest standards and is in full working order. Immaculately presented and ready to go - this clock is a rare find!

Alston (Aldston) in the former county of Cumberland has the distinction of being the highest market town in England
at 1000 ft above sea level.

All our grandfather clocks have been sympathetically restored to the highest standards by our small team of specialist craftsmen and skilled artisans.

They are offered for sale clearly priced, delivered and installed in your home with a full guarantee as to their authenticity and good working order.
